RE:Thoughts on this deal?
(Date Posted:10/13/2009 16:01:20)
Heh, too slow =) I have a FT T4 lined up, courtesy of Dennis. Once I get my bonus, I am getting the rest of the electronics. Looks like I am going to a Mamba Max 4600kv motor and ESC. If anyone wants to weigh in on that...?

You really need a sensored brushless they are a lot smoother for off road. Unlless you are really getting a super--super good deal.

Ok. So what's the difference between sensored and sensorless? Other than that one has a sensor and one does not =P

Very helpful! Thanks Danny! http://www.teamnovak.com/tech_info/brushless/sensor_vs_sensorless.html Here is a pretty good explanation, though a little more "techy" than I was looking for... long and short of it is sensored ESC and motors "know" the position of the rotor at all times, and know how to match the power to the RPM at all times. Sensorless setups require some start-up time in order to reach the correct phase between power and rotor position. I think

Aaron,
I would get an LRP or Novak sensored system - at the end of the day, its only a bit more of an investment, that will make your racing more enjoyable. Nothing is worse that making a concession on the equipment, and being stuck with stuff that makes it harder for you to drive/race for a long time.
I've been running the LRP stuff for about 2 years, with no problems at all. I had a motor bearing fail Friday night, but that is my fault as I have done ZERO maintenance on that motor since I have had it. I took it apart for the first time to replace the bearing.

I have to agree with Tim. I believe the sensored esc is soomther & dont cogg(stutter). LRP is a great product as Novak.. I own both & love them. Like he said... be cheap now...you will pay more later...lol

The combo I was looking at was $190 from Mamba, so prices should be similar... now I am left with no idea what combo to get. I am trying to stick with something that can be geared/tuned down in terms of power, but won't be something I'll want to replace in 3 months. Or is that asking too much =) Thanks again for any feedback.

Yeah, I have to agree with Tim as well. Castle creations are not meant to be raced on 1/10 off road vehicles. Sensored motors are the best way to go. LRP is great and Speed Passion is pretty good too. Unless you are racing 1/8 electric, leave castle to the bashers.

So what voltage/turn limit should I be looking for? If I know that, then I think I can get a ESC that will work for me. I am liking what I see with LRP but am pretty clueless... if you couldn't already tell, that is!

RE:Thoughts on this deal?
(Date Posted:10/13/2009 19:51:27)
You mention a 4600kv motor above - I have no idea what that equates to in terms of turns. Most of the competition grade brands, LRP, Novak, Speed Pasion, etc all grade them in turns of wire in the can.
The super stock class is 13.5T, and modified is obviously open. I would say a 10.5 would be a good motor for club racing, and you can turn the EPA on the radio down a bit to take away a little rpm. If you are going to race the state races and such, you will need a 13.5, so keep that in mind.
I run a 7.5 in my truck. When racing on that layout in Ocala, I have my throttle EPA set around 90% in my truck - so I'm not getting full throttle. Its a little more powerful than my B4 with an 8.5T, so I guess it feels like about a 8.0T in effect.
I just searched online and found this:
http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/products_id/32764/n/LRP-Sphere-Competition-ESC-Vector-X-11-Stock-Spec-Brushless-Motor-Combo-105T
Tower and all those guys have discount codes floating around the internet that could save you another $20 or so - so you looking at only another 40 bucks or so for top quality equipment.

I wasn't sure if the 10.5 was too much or if it could be manageable. Thanks for the tip. Seems like the local hobby shop isn't stocked so great right now =( I may have to wait another week. I am gonna try like crazy to have everything together so I can race both classes on Saturday. Wish me luck =)

Re:Thoughts on this deal?

Aaron, Im not really doing this anymore but my two cents is this. I like Novak, always have. They make a great affordable combo that I think you would be really happy with. I provided the link below...$150 bro, you get a really good club level speed control that is very tunable. It has as many settings as the LRP Sphere which is double the price. Its the Novak Havoc 3S speedo with a Novak 13.5T SS Pro motor...Excellent to get you familiar with driving the vehicle and the 13.5 motor you can take from the club level to a state race and be very competitive. The Speedo has a Lipo cutoff and can handle both a 2 cell or 3 cell Lipo battery...If you want affordable and performance, in my opinion, you cant beat this combo..Hope this helps

**CORRECTION** The Havoc speedo with that combo only takes a 2 cell Lipo but thats all you will need anyway...Dont know too many people that run a 3 cell at the track...No need for it

Tim, I believe the 4600kv Mamba is equivilant to the Novak 10.5T which is rated around 4200kv...The 8.5T is around 5000kv if that helps any

Todd, thanks for the info. I had my local hobby shop order that combo, same price. Looks like a winner for something I can start with now, and grow with later.

make sure you get a cap for it. I did notice in the past with my Novak systems, depending on the servo, voltage drop will cause the esc to shut off. I was running a jr 9100s at the time and my esc kept shutting of until I bought a cap. They plug right into the reciever.

Cool, that's why I come to you guys to draw on your experience. I'd much prefer to get it right the first time. Though I think this speed controller comes with one pre-installed, if you follow the link and zoom in on the picture.

Got the motor and ESC today. Most of the stock settings seem good, though I might play with the drag brake a bit, as well as the minimum brake. Feels like Saturday is never going to get here

Drag brake should = 0 Work you way up slowly on the punch. Set your throttle to linear. Make sure lipo cut off it on. Make sure overheat protection is on. Put on track and go race..........
